Analysts predict that 50 % of VLJ sales will be outside the USA and the next most significant market is Latin America and the Caribbean. Many analysts predict that Latin America, and Brazil in particular, will see substantial growth in business aviation and owner/pilot purchases as the Latin American economies expand over the next decade. The advent of the VLJ has been compared to the impact that the budget airlines have had on commercial aviation. Others have described the innovative thinking and scope of VLJ applications as comparable to the arrival of new generation computers. However, there's a way to go and many issues to be addressed if the VLJ is to be successful in Latin America and the Caribbean - regulatory and otherwise. Following our popular VLJ conferences in Dubai and Vienna, MIU takes it's innovative VLJ series of events to Rio in December to examine how the VLJ will adapt to life in Latin America and the Caribbean. Will the VLJ dance the Samba or get drunk with the band? VLJs WEST | | How Many VLJs are on the Way? The Very Light Jet story unwinding before us is history in the making. There was a statement made not long ago that so many VLJ s were on the way that they might very well “darken the skies.” (This rumor was likely perpetrated by the airline industry in their desperate campaign against general aviation in promotion of user fees.) As of June 2007, Cessna had delivered 8 Mustangs out of a planned production of 40 aircraft this year. In early October 2007, the Eclipse fleet was approximately 50 aircraft. Here are current forecasts of how many VLJs are on the way: VLJ FORECASTS | | Worldwide Pilot Shortage Looms US- World Peace Herald: "I think that between 2010 and 2020 the pilot shortage is really going to be exacerbated with..retirements," said Daniel Elwell, assistant administrator for the FAA. To buy the industry time, the FAA is working to change its retirement policy to allow one of two pilots in a crew to fly up to the age of 65. Researchers estimate that 3,800 pilots could be added to the national supply if the retirement age were raised to 65. Australia- Perth Now Report: AUSTRALIA's biggest private regional carrier has warned that a looming pilot shortage will mean flight cancellations, driving small airlines to the wall. India-N2Comm Reports: Dinesh Keskar, Boeing's senior vice president for commercial aircraft sales, has reportedly stated that there is "a tremendous shortage of pilots in India". According to The Associated Press, Keskar said that India will probably need 4,000-5,000 new pilots in the next five years. Fortunately for Very Light Jet owners in the US, retired and retiring airline pilots are positioning to offer pilot and mentor services to the fleet of Very Light Jets that are arriving.. VLJ PILOTS | | EPIC Aicraft Partners With Indian Investor AWST Reports: EPIC AIRCRAFT expects to "immediately benefit" from the relationships that Indian billionaire Dr. Vijay Mallya - who recently purchased "a significant interest" in the Oregon-based general aviation manufacturer - has with other aviation companies such as Airbus and Pratt & Whitney. Press reports suggest Mallya, who owns and operates India's Kingfisher Airlines, may have injected several hundred million dollars in Epic Aircraft. EPIC AIRCRAFT | Thanks for reading our report. I hope to see you at VLJ West in San Diego! Sincerely, Bill Strait CEO & President VLJ Group LLC
