VLJs - What Is In It For Us?

PDF
I decided that “Editorial” was too literary a term for my increasingly frequent communications with you all. I fly jets for a living. The title of “Captain’s Log” was suggested by my first officer on my latest world travel adventure. I like it. I am exercising unusual restraint not to call the date of entry “stardate” because of my secret oath of loyalty to Captain Kirk.

I was privileged to spend a few hours with Tim McConnell last week.  Tim is co-founder of SATSAir . Tim and I caught up at Signature PBI during his multi-stop Florida promotional tour. He was logging landings at a host of over 100 Florida airports to announce the launch of SatsAir service in the state.

I learned about his company’s incredibly successful air-cab concept. The star of their service is the intriguing Cirrus SR22 and we mention it in the context of our venerable Very Light Jet Magazine because we are expanding our coverage of the air-taxi business.
Tim is an accomplished pilot and seasoned aviation business owner. He has flown airliners and owned charter companies on his path to SATSAir.

Tim knew that I live to fly so he was gracious enough to take me for a ride in one of their 40 SR22’s. He explained “on the fly” how the service has caught on with business and pleasure flyers.

We departed PBI east, in plain sight of Mar-A-Lago, and then headed north up the Florida coast. We talked about the value of the parachute built into the SR22 and how that feature has been a huge marketing tool for his company. I also found out that air bags are built into the shoulder harnesses! Listen to our Personal Profile interview here:

Yes- I got to fly it. My sincere thanks to my friend Tim for enabling me to add the SR22 to the 32 year list of aircraft I have flown. What is that number now- over 1000? (Note that “how many different planes” a pilot has flown is a subject of serious rivalry among pilots and has resulted in many wagers being won and lost and much posturing. The numbers are never exaggerated.)

SATSAir is already doing what the Very Light Jet concept originally purported to accomplish. Could it be that there is a VLJ in their future operation??

Oh yes- the trip- the day job! I went to Sydney last week. In keeping with my international coverage of the VLJs I looked up Luke King, the co-founder and Director of Marketing for Australia’s GoJet

GoJet of Australia plans to offer VLJ fractional ownerships to the land down under. Luke is a commercial pilot with time in jets and started his first IT company at the age of 14! A seasoned aviator at 20 years old, he is traveling the world in the promotion and development of their progressive aircraft management and fractional concept. Here is our interview:

Australia is vast and beautiful. With a sprawling population equal to Florida there is a lot of territory for the Very Light Jets to cover there. GoJet is definitely leading the way! I will be in touch with my friend Luke and we will follow the progress of GoJet as they pioneer the very Light Jet business in the fantastic Wallaby and Vegemite sandwich country. Contact them at 61 2 4256 4448 for more information on fractional VLJ ownership and aircraft management in Australia.

The international development of the VLJs is quite a story. I have more interviews planned for my next trip to Dubai and Hong Kong in a few weeks. Stay tuned.

In response to the ongoing requests for the magazine in print we are considering the launch of VLJ Magazine Electronic Edition. This interim publication would be fully downloadable and printable.
