The Promise of VLJs

PDF
Very Light Jet Magazine, VLJs, Microjets, Personal Jets and now PLJs or Personal Light Jets! What's it all about? More important: What is in this Very Light Jet travel for us? If you made it this far you are a valued part of our growing audience, averaging 30,000 readers a month. Most of us are curious about any way to improve our business and personal travel experience.

NASA and the aviation industry have decided to take advantage of a great opportunity to start using the over 5000 small airports around the country and make some small jets that could use this valuable real estate. Lowering the price of entry to the private jet owner club for the individual and businesses is one result of this effort.

These intrepid jet manufacturers are also responding to a growing demand for true air-taxi services. Why not drive to the local airport and get on a small jet and go on a trip? Incredible concept! The jets are starting to arrive and the air-taxi services are gearing up. This is the real deal!

I was recently a guest speaker at Northwood University on the subject of VLJs and their advantages. Interest in this mode of travel has come full circle and now includes domestic and international parties, including students!

For pilots anticipating VLJ ownership, the subject of getting qualified to fly your jet is of growing interest. The standards used to qualify you to fly it is a matter of much controversy. Very Light Jet Magazine was recently invited to monitor a timely, progressive, and ongoing report on this subject, Achieving VLJ Training Standardization, so we interviewed the author, Bob Barnes. Read our article here and contribute to the project.

Image Our Executive Interview Series features an exclusive interview with Piper CEO James Bass, this month. In a future installment, Jack Pelton, CEO of Cessna, will discuss the Mustang. We are completing our interview with Bob Bornhofen of Excel-Jet, and our series will also include Rick Schrameck of AIR discussing developments of his EpicJet.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the participants and plan to update these and introduce other interviews frequently. If you missed one, they are always available in our interview archives.

The progress of the single-engine jets reported on in Very Light Jet Magazine may be under a new category in the near future. In recognition of the Personal Light Jet (PLJ) designation, we will report the progress under that designation.
