Can Very Light Jet Air Taxis Save Us From Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport?

PDF

NEWS FLASH- CLICK HERE to be notified when my book: VERY LIGHT JETS- Our Air Taxis Into The Future becomes available!

On descent to Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport

I fly jets for a living and often travel via commercial airline to position for a trip. This commute is from West Palm Beach to Anchorage and, of course, has to include the familiar stopover in Atlanta.

My three-leg journey to get to work would be greatly improved if I had access to the greatly anticipated VLJ Air Taxi services. (I have been fortified with complimentary cheese crackers and a Coke so I am OK for now.)

Air Taxi anyone?  In air charter services the customer generally pays to rent the entire plane and also pays for the aircraft to be repositioned. Air taxi services plan to offer "seats on demand."  Imagine Air  lunched air-taxi service this week with plans to include VLJs in their fleet.

One of the major tenets of VLJ travel technology as originally envisioned by NASA/SATS is the development of Air Taxi services. For the planned air taxi services to work, many of our 5000 underused and smaller airports would be drafted back into service. Air Taxis should also relieve the crowding of people and planes at the 19 major air hubs in use today.

Very Light Jet Magazine is promoting public awareness of the VLJ Air Taxi business, now in fragile infancy. To that end we have dedicated a new section, Air Taxis , devoted exclusively to this valuable subject. We have some dynamic content on the way and have committed to report on the companies in various stages of development of this brand new way to travel.

We are also working closely with FATA , CASA, and other organizations who share our commitment to maximizing the value of Very Light Jets for the traveling public.

(I have to turn off all portable or electronic devices now, although I don’t believe they hurt the airplane's chances of finding the runway. If all goes well I will continue this report from the all too familiar Hartsfield terminal.)

On the political front there is a war going on in aviation right now. This battle is over user fees and the two sides are commercial (airline) aviation and general/ business aviation. Why is that issue being discussed in our venerable publication? Well, for one, operating cost of VLJs could be directly affected.

General/ business aviation is fighting user fees through their strongest organizations including National Business Aviation Association which we support. Here is NBAA president Ed Bolen’s recent statement before the US Senate: http://web.nbaa.org/public/news/pr/2007/20070308-016.php

We called in the experts to help us understand the effects of proposed user fees on our rapidly expanding Very Light Jet community. Here is our exclusive interview with NBAA’s Steve Brown, Senior VP of Operations, conducted one-on-one at the recent NBAA regional convention:

If you would care to join the fight, the best place to start is NBAA. They are leading the opposition and reporting on the developments in real-time. Special thanks to Steve Brown for his time and interest in our coverage of the most important user fee issue.

We are also partnering with The Alliance for Aviation Across America Today www.aviationacrossamerica.org in their fight against user fees.

My wife and I were the guests of Private Air Magazine at their recent Rater event in Miami. Very Light Jet Magazine and Private Air have agreed to co-promote the VLJ Rater Event in Aspen in August. More information on this exciting event will be forthcoming.

Sun N” Fun in Lakeland is my next VLJ event stop.

Image Scheduled interviews there include Cessna’s Chief Jack Pelton and Epic CEO Rich Schrameck. I plan to participate in the Aviation Week and Space Technology VLJ Conference in May and interview more business leaders who are in the trenches of Very Light Jet and Air Taxi development.
